DYCOTT STUD

As the new year unfolds, it is time for those  involved in breeding and showing Welsh ponies and cobs to look forward but  I can't let 2009 pass without recording a unique achievment for a local Welsh cob stud.

2009 was the first time that a Welsh cob produced in this region has won the George Prince of Wales Cup.    First presented in 1908 to promote the breeding of Welsh cobs of the old type; the cup, which is currently worth over £4000, is the ultimate accolade for those showing Welsh cobs in hand.

In the Autumn of 2008, George Mitchell and Clare Granger of The Dycott Stud, Chingford, Essex took delivery of a lean two year old colt from the Pennal Stud, Aberystwyth in preparation for showing in hand during 2009.

In April 2009, the colt, Pennal Brynmor, was champion at Lampeter Stallion Show and later at Glanusk Show; the two most prestigous shows before the Royal Welsh Show in July.   Pennal Brymor also won at the Suffolk County Show, beating our own Fivewinds Ffanci into second place.  I am not always so magnanimous in defeat but it may be some time before I stand next to a Prince of Wales Cup winner again.

By the time of the Royal Welsh Show last july, George Mitchell was driving Pennal Brynmor ten miles a day on the roads around Chingford. The colt was fit to trot for his life and he had to because by the time of his 3 year old class on the Tuesday of the Royal Welsh Show, which he won; the huge main ring was cutting up badly due to heavy storms.

So the great day arrived; Wednesday at the Royal Welsh is "cob day" with some classes having  40 forward. The mare and foal classes are in the morning followed by the stallion classes in the afternoon and finally the Prince of Wales Cup.  The atmosphere was building throughout the day with many spectators claiming their grandstand seats by 8.30am.

By the time of the senior stallion class  there were over 30,000 people around the main ring and countless thousands watching on television around the world.  I have watched and taken part in the senior stallion class but never have I seen such atrocious conditions. The long trot up the front of the grandstand through a cacophony of sound is hard enough but by the time of the senior stallion class last year,  which was won by Pennal Brynmor's sire, Gwenllan Brynmor, the ring had turned to ankle deep slurry.

The Prince of Wales Cup was judged, as were all the Welsh cob classes by Mr.John Batt of the Abergaveny Stud, who took his time with the class winners before him, creating an electric atmosphere.

Pennal Brynmor won to a huge cheer; the lovely mare Ring Danielle from Belgium was reserve.  It is most unusual for a 3 year old to win The Prince of Wales Cup but his quality had already been noticed in Wales. At the time of his great achievement last July Pennal Brynmor's foals were on the ground at the Cascob Stud.

Pennal Brynmor and The Prince of Wales Cup stayed in Wales and Dai Harris of the Pennal Stud commissioned a replica set of rosettes for George Mitchell.

Thoughts now turn to 2010, and I wish good luck to all Welsh pony and cob exhibitors in the region.

END
